Attempting to Unite a Divided Nation

On Tuesday night, 2/4/20, one week ago, President Trump gave the annual State of the Union Address. He reported on many items he feels are positive about the United States of America this year. He noted economic, technological, and societal changes that show a nation growing stronger and more beneficial to all of its citizens. Over the next few days, we want to highlight just a few of those things for the purposes of prayer and to give God the glory, not man, for these advancements. We believe they are answers to the multitudes of prayers that have been prayed for America over the last 20-30 years. God is using this administration, but He is behind it all.

President Trump began his Address in the U. S. House of Representatives’ chamber, before two very divided political parties. The Democratic majority in the Congress voted to impeach him in December. The Republican-led Senate was going to vote the next morning to acquit him of those charges. Before them, he made this statement: 

“The agenda I will lay out this evening is not a Republican agenda or a Democrat agenda. It’s the agenda of the American people. Many of us have campaigned on the same core promises: to defend American jobs and demand fair trade for American workers; to rebuild and revitalize our nation’s infrastructure; to reduce the price of healthcare and prescription drugs; to create an immigration system that is safe, lawful, modern, and secure; and to pursue a foreign policy that puts America’s interests first.

“There is a new opportunity in American politics, if only we have the courage, together, to seize it. Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country. We can make our communities safer, our families stronger, our culture richer, our faith deeper, and our middle class bigger and more prosperous than ever before. But we must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good. Together, we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future. The decision is ours to make.

“We must choose between greatness or gridlock, results or resistance, vision or vengeance, incredible progress or pointless destruction.Tonight, I ask you to choose greatness.”

“So then, let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.” (Romans 14:19; ESV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

• Intercede before the throne of Grace between what is and ought to be regarding the political division in this nation. Our legislators must put aside partisanship and choose to work together for the good of the citizens of the nation.
• Decree, “So then, let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”
• Agree with our president and declare, “There is a new opportunity in American politics, if only we have the courage, together, to seize it. Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country. We can make our communities safer, our families stronger, our culture richer, our faith deeper, and our middle class bigger and more prosperous than ever before. But we must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good. Together, we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future. The decision is ours to make.”
• Give all the glory to God for the great things He is doing for our nation, using very human people. Say, “To God be the Glory, great things He has done!”

A prayer you can pray:

Father, my heart is burning, exploding, with gratitude as I watch You turn this great nation toward Your will. It makes me sad that there are those so offended at political outcomes that they are not able to see You at work right in front of their faces. They are so intent on wiping out the will of the people, and removing President Trump, that they can’t see or acknowledge the good things that are happening. How grievous this is. Please open their blind eyes. Please reveal to them their offended hearts, especially if they say they know You. If they go to Your Word at all, lead them to those passages that reveal truth, and don’t let them think it’s for the other party! Chip away at the divide between us one person at a time. Your Word has the plan for life and blessing, prosperity and salvation. Take them there. Show them and lead them all to say, “Let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”

There is a new opportunity in American politics, if only our leaders have the courage, together, to seize it. Victory is not winning for any political party. Victory is winning for our country. We pray for them, because they can work together to make our communities safer, our families stronger, our culture richer, our faith deeper, and our middle class bigger and more prosperous than ever before. But they must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good. Help them work together, Jesus. Together, they can break decades of political stalemate. Grace them to bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future. You command the blessing where there is unity. God, we give You glory for every answered prayer, and the great things You are doing in this nation! Amen.
