Finding peace in the Midst of the Storm 

“When all around is sinking sand, on Christ the solid Rock, I stand…”1 There are times in all of our lives when chaos seems to be overwhelming us. Our life circumstances have moved beyond our control. We find nothing to grab onto. We can’t sleep, can’t eat, and often don’t have a clue what course of action to take. It may seem like there is nothing we can do except wait it out. Those are the times we are so thankful we know Jesus Christ! Where would we be without Him? The enemy’s shouts may grow deafening, our losses may be staggering, and it may feel like wolves are circling our feet, waiting to finish us off.  However, we have a Savior! Jesus is the everlasting love to which we can cling. When we are innocent, we can rest in Him. When we are unable, He is more than able. He will defend us, deliver us, heal us, and restore us. He loves us.

“And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” (Isaiah 32:17-18; ESV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

  • Florence has destroyed homes, businesses, livestock, and other agriculture. At least 37 lives have been lost. Weep with those who are weeping. Pray they would turn to the Lord and feel his sweet and loving presence. Pray that the old hymns, like the one above, would flood their memories and turn their hearts toward the Lord.
  • Pray for everyone involved in the Brett Kavanaugh situation to be touched by God’s hand. Continue to intercede for truth to be known.
  • Intercede for the media. They can be used to report truth, but they are attempting to be mind-molders in this season. They seem more intent on trying to influence opinions rather than report facts. Headlines and first paragraphs (often, all that is read in an article) are largely inflammatory. Call them into order!
  • Run to God with your own personal life situation, if you are experiencing circumstances beyond your control. Find rest and peace, and grace to help in time of need.

A prayer you can pray:

Lord, the tragedies occurring in North and South Carolina are horrible. My heart is turned toward all those who are suffering the loss of loved ones, property, and businesses. No amount of monetary compensation can restore lives and memories. People need You, Jesus. Holy Spirit, reveal Christ to many. Let compassion lead to revival in those devastated areas. Remind them of the words of songs they may have heard some time in their lives. Let those old hymns bring them comfort. Still the political firestorm over the Kavanaugh confirmation process. Give everyone involved wisdom to know how to proceed. Let truth be known. Correct the media! We call them into order and say, “Report the truth! I don’t want to hear your opinions or see that you have twisted things to suit your own biased narrative!” Lord, I need You in (tell Him about your own challenging situation). I don’t know how to proceed. I need to feel Your love, concern and comfort. Heal my heart and keep me close to You while You sort it all out for me. I trust You and Your Word. In Jesus’ loving name, amen.
