God, Forgive Our Nation

I didn’t respond right away to last Monday’s Supreme Court decision in Bostock v Clayton County. Frankly, it was a surprising decision. Sadly, the effect is purported by conservative legal experts to be as bad as we thought it would be. This ruling in this case redefines sex discrimination in Title VII to include LGBTQ individuals. Once again, nine Justices on the U. S. Supreme Court have legislated from the bench! Below is some information to help us make our voices heard and points for prayer from our friends at Intercessors for America.

“A few years ago, most of us were surprised when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the Obergefell case. At the time of the decision, I was speaking at a conference; I recall talking about the decision and the potential impact. I instantly felt the grieving in God’s heart as the highest court in the most powerful nation in history, founded in Christian principles, redefined His most basic expression of love: marriage. I wondered what the impact would be in our nation.

“I had no idea. I had no idea about gender fluidity–that a person’s concept of gender could move back and forth between male and female. I had no idea that a person could identify as NEITHER male nor female. I had no idea about the phrase ‘sex assigned a birth.’

“Fast forward five years to this week when, once again, the Supreme Court of our nation ruled on sex in one decision based on three separate court cases; Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia is the lead. The Bostock ruling involves the question of what is employment discrimination on the basis of ‘sex’, as prohibited by Title VII. The term ‘sex’ was determined to include: anatomy, behavior, gender identity, and attraction. Now all these things are within the broadest definition of ‘sex’, at the core of a ‘protected class’ legally requiring a governmentally prescribed treatment.

“Here is an explanation of discrimination written by Justice Neil Gorsuch in the majority opinion: ‘An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. In other words: because a woman wears dresses to work, you can’t discriminate against a man who wears dresses to work.’

“Please read that paragraph over. Let that sink in. This is a twisted rationale that legally protects the idea that there is no difference between male and female in the workplace. It’s not that everyone is equal, this ruling really declares everyone is the SAME. The God given – beautiful – distinction between male and female was blurred even before this ruling, with male athletes competing in female competitions, and men using female bathrooms, and more. Allowing women to wear dresses is ‘some’ form of equality, but it is not the same as when men wear them, because men and women are NOT the same. This ruling treats everyone the same and calls it equality.

“Obergefell redefined God’s definition of marriage. Bostock declares God’s differences between men and women do not exist.”

“He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created.” (Genesis 5:2; NKJV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

• Read Genesis chapters 1 though 5 and solidify in your own mind God’s intent in creating male and female.
• Decree, “God created us in His image and likeness. He made mankind male and female.”
• Repent of any known sexual sin in your own life.
• Intercede identificationally for the decision of the U. S. Supreme Court justices. They do not understand what they have done.
• Pray for our nation now, but especially for our children and children’s children who will grow up without an understanding of the beauty and simplicity of gender meaning only male and female.

A prayer you can pray:

Lord, save us from the unimaginable effects of Bostock. Forgive us. We have no idea what this decision will mean to our nation as it releases this definition, which is against Your Word and nature. Turn this decision back. We have no other saving grace but You. 

Forgive us our own sexual sin, Father. How can we think to have our prayers heard if we are participating in similar sin? How dare we even ask. God, deliver each of us first and foremost. Forgive the Church for letting a door be opened because of our pride and unrepentant attitudes. We can’t even flirt with sexual sin if we want to turn this around in America!

Even as we repent, God, let the voices be heard of all those who believe that gender is male and female alone, uniquely assigned to each one of us by You. We pray that our Supreme Court justices would hear truth and rule in true justice and righteousness, instead of making up rulings based on their own thinking. That is how things were in the time when judges ruled Israel—every man did what was right in his own eyes. That was abhorrent to You, God. Forgive us that we have come to this place as a nation.

Lord, we do not hate the homosexual or the transgendered individual. We know how much You love and care about them. You desire that they would come to Jesus, the one that loves them the most. However, we cannot bend our nation’s laws to accommodate chosen lifestyles and genders. That is a very slippery slope that our society may not recover from. Where does the line get drawn? How far will the envelope get pushed? Save us Lord and we shall be saved. We pray all this in deep humility in Jesus’ loving name. Amen.
