Caleb and the Giants
There is a very significant city in Israel, named Hebron. It is one of the most important cities in the promised land. Many of the Patriarchs in Israeli history are buried there. Abraham and Sarah are buried there. The word, “Hebron” means “covenantal friendship”. Between the time of Abraham and Joshua, the greatest giant in all the land had captured Hebron. He wanted Hebron, because it was the highest city in all the land. So, symbolically, it represented the highest place of authority. He conquered the city and renamed it after himself—Kiriath Arbah, which means “the city of Arbah”.
Listen carefully. When you give place to the underworld, they can come to the upper world. They will ascend to the high place of authority in that place.
Caleb went into the land as one of the 12 spies that Joshua sent into the Promised Land. He was filled with righteous indignation. He looked up to the place that used to be Hebron, but which was now ruled by the greatest giant. That was the place that once represented covenant friendship with God. He looked at it and said, “I want that city right there. I want to take that land and I’m willing to take down the biggest giant!” Caleb did capture that city, and defeated Arbah and his three sons.
“Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, with the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.” (Joshua 14:12; NIV)
Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:
- Declare, “Lord, give me (name your city, school, neighborhood, or other giant-controlled place.)”
- Say, “I am aware that there are giants entrenched in the land, but with You helping me, I will drive them out, just as You show me how to.”
- Bring any sense of fear, inadequacy, or insecurity to Him, so He can show you who you are, and how He will fight for you and through you to defeat the giants in your territory.
- Decree, “I want this city right here. I want to take this land and I’m willing to take down the biggest giant, so this place can glorify the Lord Jesus!”
A prayer you can pray:
Lord, Caleb knew the history of the place He was standing in front of. He knew how the enemy had hated it being a place that honored You, so giants moved in. The good news is that Caleb decided it really was ground that belonged to the Lord and he would take it back! Give me my (place where giants are that you are claiming. This can be a city, school, neighborhood or other place.) I see the giants there and I see the effect they are having on this place. They have turned it from a place that could glorify God into an unholy, even destructive place. Give me the faith of Caleb, so I can remove the giants from the land. Show me who I am and show me how You see me, so any insecurity or fear will fall away. Show me what You wanted for this place. Show me what You intend for this place. What is Your dream or vision? I want to see this place glorify You, Jesus. Let’s go get those giants out of there! Amen.
Today’s decree:
We are a Caleb company and we will remove the giants and take back the nation for the Glory of God!
