The Miseries of Society are Whose Fault? Quotes from Noah Webster
Noah Webster published the first American dictionary of the English language in 1828. He said, “Education is useless without the Bible. Moral principles and precepts contained in the scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws.” Then he made this strong statement, “All the miseries and evils which men suffer proceed from their despising or neglecting what is contained in the Bible.” He also said, “The principles of genuine liberty, and of wise laws and administrations, are to be drawn from the Bible and sustained from its authority. The man, therefore, who weakens or destroys the Divine authority of that book may be accessory to all the public disorders which society is doomed to suffer.” Let me paraphrase that. “Those that distort and move us away from the principles of scripture until we are experiencing all of the curses and evils of society – they caused it.”
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (1 Timothy 3:16-17; ESV)
Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:
- Identificationally repent for this nation which looks to man for answers that only God can give.
- Repent for the societal messes we have as a nation, because we have not sought God and His Word for the answers to the sinful underlying causes of the problems we face – ignoring God, fatherlessness, the devaluing of life, addictions, poverty, and human trafficking key among them.
- Ask the Father to draw us back to His Word with a hunger for it and a thirst for righteous knowledge.
- Pray that God raises up modern day champions who have been trained by the Spirit and the Word to solve the seemingly unsolvable issues of the day.
A prayer you can pray:
God, I repent for the sins of my nation, especially the sin of independence from God, where we look to ourselves for wisdom that only You have. Look at the mess we are in, Lord. We are suffering as a whole, because we act like you don’t exist. The fruit of our rebellion against You is fatherlessness, the abortion of our children, addictions of all kinds, poverty, loneliness, and the buying and selling of human lives. Father, forgive us. Draw us back to Your Word. The words of Life and true wisdom and knowledge are there and there alone. Give us champions today, like William Wilberforce and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and others, who can take down societal giants with their prayers and persistence and total trust in You. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
Today’s decree:
I decree that the principles of genuine liberty, and of wise laws and administrations, will be drawn from the Bible and sustained from its authority alone in the United States of America in this generation.
