Martin Luther King Celebration Day

“Martin Luther King Celebration Day is important to me, because it marks 12 years of friendship with my dear friend, Matt Lockett.  We didn’t know each other before this day, but we both were led to a prayer gathering at the Lincoln Memorial on Jan 17th, 2005, because of separate dreams we received.  Nine years later, you can only imagine how awestruck we were to discover that Matt’s family owned my family during slavery!  Only God could have us start a lasting friendship from the place where Dr. King said in his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, ‘I have a dream, that one day the sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners could sit down together at the table of brotherhood.’  This all happened because God hasn’t forgotten the dream of His Son, of John 17, that His glory would come and make us one, so that the world would believe.   The God of providence is healing the race issue in America at the table of brotherhood.  And yes, join us….there’s still room at the table.” (William Ford, III)1

“I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:23; NIV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

  • Worship the Lord for His ways are marvelous. He orchestrates the circumstances of our lives such that we are left undone in His Presence.
  • Ask the Lord to create a John 17 unity between the races in America, therefore to fulfill His desire and that of Martin Luther King, Jr. Where there is unity, the Lord commands the blessing.
  • Intercede into the race issue in America and ask the Lord to heal it so completely that it resides only in our history books.

A prayer you can pray:

Lord, we worship You for the way in which you cause the course of our lives to unfold in ways that amaze us. You are truly intimately acquainted with all of our ways and those of the generations before us. Lord, use our lives in this generation to bring healing to our nation’s past. Fulfill the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the dream that is Yours, as stated in John 17. Unite the races, black and white together, and make us one, even as You are one. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.
