You Are A Watchman
“Watch over your heart with all diligence for from it flows the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23; KJV)
“Watch” is translated from the Greek word natsar, a word for “watchman”. We are to be watchmen for others, as well as for our own hearts, guarding what we allow to enter. The soul (the mind, will and emotions) is the essence of who we are. We must guard our souls, carefully determining what is allowed to enter – being mindful of what our eyes see, ears hear, and what we allow to come into our hearts. And although we cannot control everything, we can be gatekeepers who strategically watch over what does and doesn’t have access to us. We should then be watchful over what is given a right to be in our homes, affecting what our family sees and hears, always making sure it’s in line with what will please Jesus. Be strategic with what God has entrusted to you, using the tools in His Word. Be His watchman over what is important to Him—the members of your family. (Ceci Sheets)1
Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:
- Ask Jesus to make you mindful of what you are allowing to come into your heart.
- Pray that you will be cautious as to what you allow in your home through television, books, games, etc.
- Pray that from your heart would come life – and only what pleases Jesus.
- Ask God to make you more sensitive to the Holy Spirit as He leads you as a watchman.
A prayer you can pray:
Lord Jesus, thank you for your Holy Spirit who teaches me all things. I am grateful that You have given me this helper who can guide me as I commit to be careful of what I allow to satisfy my mind, my will, and my emotions. Help me to be a watchman who will obey You and please only You. I know You will give me the strength to do what needs to be done. In Jesus’ name.
Today’s decree:
I set recommit myself to be a watchman for my own soul, as well as for my household.
