God Established America With Imperfect Christians
How can it be true that God sent Christians to these shores to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom here and to the nations of the earth? The first Christian settlers to these shores did at times treat the Native Americans unfairly. I am not defending what our ancestors did. God has been having us repent for a generation. What He wants us to do now is to join hearts. He wants to join together the First Nations peoples, Caucasians, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and any other people groups in America. He wants to join us all together for this great cause—a worldwide harvest.
People of all faiths are welcome in this nation, but God specifically raised up America to trumpet the message of Christ, His salvation, and His Kingdom. Here are some quotes showing what God wanted and what our founders intended.
“Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” —George Washington
“The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” —John Quincy Adams
When the Pilgrims landed, they wrote the Mayflower Compact. It was a covenant they made together. Before disembarking, they prayed together, took communion together and read this Compact/covenant. One of the phrases in it was that they were coming to this land “…for the Glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”
Has America always done everything right? No. But that doesn’t change the destiny that God has for this nation. Why would God ask us to pray that the ancient markers be restored, as He did to me recently in a dream? Because our destiny is still intact. There’s still a calling on this nation to be a voice for Him in the earth. That’s what the quotes above are all about.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9; ESV)
Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:
- We need look no further than ourselves to answer the question, “How can it be true that God sent very imperfect Christians to these shores to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom here and to the nations of the earth?” Because He always works through imperfect people.
- Rejoice that you have been forgiven if you have repented of your sins and are born again!
- Thank the Lord for showing us in the Bible all of the imperfections of those He has used throughout all of history to carry out His plans in the earth.
- Praise Him that He forgives, but still gets the job done through we imperfect ones.
- Read the historic quotes above out loud as a prayer and conclude with “…for the Glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith” on the earth.
- Declare, “Despite our failures, America’s destiny to be a voice of the Gospel to the nations is still intact!”
A prayer you can pray:
Father, thank You so much that You have not demanded perfection from us. You knew we would not be able to walk perfectly before You at all times. You knew sin and fear would get the better of us at times. But You sent Jesus to die on the Cross for us and be raised from the dead in a power that raises us in reconciliation to You. We thank You for hearing our prayers of repentance over the years for the sins of our nation’s forefathers. Lord, You are faithful to forgive and deliver, because You have a plan to accomplish. You want an army of soul-winners, and shame has no place in that. Heal our painful history and keep us going forward, fulfilling that plan.
Your Word is filled with stories of imperfect people still used by You. Israel was not perfect as a nation, yet Your Word tells us it is the apple of Your eye. It is the example of those in covenant with You. What mercy and grace, Father. We see in the historic quotes of our imperfect founding fathers an understanding of what You were doing through them. You kept Your plan in motion despite their known or unknown sin. You do the same today. You continue to woo us to the Cross in repentance, You deliver us from shame, You heal our land, and You use us to spread the Gospel of Your Kingdom to the nations. Despite our failures, America’s destiny to be a voice to spread the Gospel to the nations is still intact! Praise You, Jesus! Amen.
