Why the Lamb?

What a great season this is! I am privileged to announce the Cross and the Resurrection! I believe God is moving us into a fresh beginning in this season. There are people that come to our churches in this season that don’t come any other time of year. They may not know much about this season. They watch us online. The wonder, “What is Passover all about? What are the palm branches all about? Why is a lamb important?”

I heard of a young man recently beginning to attend a congregation. The church began to sing, “Worthy is the Lamb.” He walked over to the pastor’s wife and asked, “So, what’s with the lamb?” He had no religious background whatsoever. Think about it. To him, it would have been no different if they’d been singing about a cow or a dog or a horse. “What’s with the lamb?” So let’s look at why the lamb.

Passover is all about the sacrificial lamb that was offered when God was about to deliver Israel out of Egypt. Israel was told to put the blood of the Passover Lamb on the doorposts. Every house that had it, the angel of death would pass over. They would be protected from the death of the firstborn—the final plague God used to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage.

From that moment on, the sacrifice and deliverance that would be celebrated every year came to be called, “Passover”. That sacrificial lamb came to be called, “the Passover lamb”. God delivered His people and brought judgement to His enemies. All of that was simply leading up to the sacrificial Lamb that was Jesus.

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29; NKJV)

“For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” (1 Corinthians 5:7b; NKJV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

  • Read Revelation, chapter 5.
  • Thank the Lamb for His sacrifice. His shed blood has saved you, healed you, and delivered you.
  • Declare, ““Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
  • Worship and say, ““Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
  • Dance around with joy and praise Him!

A prayer you can pray:

Father, the picture you painted at the Passover is a poignant picture, striking in its symbolism. That picture was fulfilled by Your Son! We need to embrace the reality of what Christ did as He became that sacrificial Lamb, foretold in the Passover preparation. We need to remember the power of the shed blood to save and deliver—from slavery to sin and from bondage of every other god. Nothing can rule over us now, for whom the Son sets free is free indeed!

We are going to dance on our enemies! That’s what Passover is all about! That’s when You danced on the devil. It’s when You danced on our disease. That’s when You danced on our failures. That’s when You danced on our sin. Let Your Church hear the Word of the Lord for this season. Bring us through our door. Let us decree, “The blessings of being passed over and the blessings of crossing over are secured for us in Jesus, our Christ!” Amen.

Today’s decree:

Tell everybody! The Lamb of God takes away the sins of the world!
