Post-Election Thoughts – The House of Representatives

I have never been one to “spin” matters such as this. Those who have followed me for several years will recall that I’ve been very open and honest regarding past elections, even when that honesty meant an acknowledgement of emotional devastation and/or the predicting of dire consequences. I’ve never been comfortable attempting to ease the pain for believers with religious clichés (e.g. “God is in control,” or “God is sovereign,” both of which I’ve already heard regarding this election). I believe it is my responsibility to speak truth and always be completely honest in my responses. Having said this, I can say without hesitation that I am NOT in any way discouraged. I’m a little disappointed, yes; but not discouraged. Here’s why: Unlike many of my colleagues, I was not confident conservatives would keep the House of Representatives. Though I prayed passionately for this to occur, I simply had no word or assurance from the Lord they would do so. Therefore, I was neither devastated nor surprised when conservatives lost. Also, the losses in the House were much fewer than predicted, and much fewer than almost any other president’s party has experienced in his first mid-term election. Conservatives didn’t do all that poorly.

“Now may God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace as you believe, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13; ISV)

Give Him 15 minutes in prayer:

  • Recommit your trust of this nation to the Lord today.
  • Thank the Lord for the godly leaders that did win!
  • Commit to pray for your elected officials regardless of the party they represent. Find your Representative here .
  • Google your newly elected officials that have not yet gone to Washington, D.C. Begin praying for them now.
  • Google your state and local government leaders. You can go and meet them. Get to know them and let them know you are praying for them. Don’t be afraid!

A prayer you can pray:

Father, we choose to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. You care more about this nation than we do. You desire America to have God-fearing leaders and to be led with righteousness, justice and peace. However, Your commitment to free will gives us leaders across the political spectrum. Our position should be one of love and faith, praying in accordance with Your will for each and every one of these leaders that represent us. May Believers everywhere stir up hope and faith, look up their leaders’ contact information, communicate with them, bless them and intercede for them. We do all this so we may live and raise our children in peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
